On 18th May 2023, it was announced that Okinawa had entered the plum season by Japan Meteorological Agency.
The rainy season (Tsuyu) is a meteorological phenomenon that occurs in Japan from late spring to early summer, starting in early June and lasting for several weeks.
During Tsuyu, Japan experiences an increase in rainfall and high humidity. The rain often comes with overcast skies and cooler temperatures.
Despite the rainy weather, Tsuyu is an important period for agriculture in Japan, as the ample rainfall nourishes the crops and prepares them for the summer season.
The advantages of the rainy season include replenishing water reserves, maintaining lush vegetation, and filling up rivers and reservoirs. The high humidity is ideal for the growth of specific plants and flowers, such as hydrangeas.
However, the rainy season also presents some inconveniences. Continuous rain and humidity make outdoor activities difficult, and carrying an umbrella is necessary when going outside. The high humidity can lead to mold and decay issues, and some areas may experience flooding.
Despite these challenges, Tsuyu is an integral part of Japan’s climate and culture. Many traditional arts and customs, such as haiku and tea ceremonies, find inspiration in the beauty of this season.
